“Cassia has always trusted the Society’s choices. And when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia is certain he is the one… until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now she is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path no one dares to follow… between perfection and passion".
A bookstore assistant recommended this book to me. I was wary at first, as it looked like a love story with no action or conflict, just a girl having to choose between two guys who are both equally hot and really smart. However, as I started reading I realized it was much more than that. You never expected the secrets the characters revealed throughout the story.
The trilogy is set in a dystopian society where everything is controlled. From people’s conversations to their dreams. In one of the chapters Cassia is terrified of dreaming of the person she was not matched with because she’s wearing a device that lets the society know what she’s dreaming. Another important fact is that handwriting has been rendered obsolete, they just use a kind of tablet called a Port, I guess that’s another way of saying ‘what you type is easier to be controlled than what you can write and hide from us’. Even the amount and type of food people get are strictly controlled. People just live, serve a purpose they’re destined to since they’re born and die… when they turn 80, no exceptions.
Everyone seems happy, until someone is not, and some people start dreaming of a better way of living.
The story starts with Cassia having her Match banquet. An event held in order to determine who you should marry, a matter in which you get no say. Cassia is all pretty in the green dress she ‘chose’ (Choices are based on a set of things that are presented to people according to their statistics, the matches are chosen in the same fashion). It goes pretty fast, with girls nervously walking to the stage and gushing about their soon-to-be husbands. When Cassia approaches the stage something goes wrong and her screen goes black for a few minutes, which is not supposed to happen. After that we all get the surprise that her Match is Xander, her really smart really cute best friend. Everything is great up to here, everyone’s super happy.
Until Ky shows up. He’s no stranger to Cassia, as he’s actually in her group of friends, but she hadn’t really paid attention to him because he was an Aberration, which is a person whose family has done something really bad and the offspring are supposed to pay for it. (There are also Anomalies, who as far as I understood are like criminals and killers). Ky is this really mysterious guy who doesn’t speak much and is kind of a loner.
When a hiking activity pairs them up together she discovers a whole new world. He teaches her how to write her name in mud (it’s really cute… seriously). And in return, she helps him believe again. When Cassia finds forbidden poems (the Society only kept a hundred of everything, paintings, poems, songs, etc. and doesn´t allow the creation of new things) inside a gift from her grandfather, she starts believing there could be something more than what she has been taught to follow.
When Ky is taken she goes after him, but in the middle she inadvertedly joins a revolution that could mean the destruction of everything she holds dear. It’s not just a love story, because actually, the second book has Ky, Cassia and Xander on completely opposite parts of the Society with almost no chance of communication, it’s all about the revolution. Even in Reached, the third book when they reunite it’s still about fighting for what they believe is right, and not just trying to sneak kisses or glances all the time.
I think this series has it all, the action, the romance and many characters you’ll love to hate :)
